How to unblock a Sink in 10 Easy Steps

It is frustrating and helpless when your kitchen sink won’t drain; it leaves dirty water and unwashed plates in your sink, which can serve as a breeding ground for household pests and parasites. At that time, you have to hire a drain unblocking company to locate the source and unblock it on an urgent basis.

Before you reach out for a plumber, there are some easy steps you can take to remedy the situation, and that is what we will be looking at in this post.

  1. Coat Hanger

This is an alternative to an instrument called the “plumber’s snake”, you straighten out a coat hanger and insert it into the stub pipe or kitchen drain to push or pull out the block.

This might not be as long as a plumber’s snake to reach some areas of the block, but it will still offer a little help to remedy the situation. When using this method, you have to be careful not to scratch your sink.

  1. Plumber’s snake

Also known as “Auger”, this tool clears blockage stuck down your draining system. Using this equipment requires skills; you must disassemble the p-trap and the drain-pipe as this will expose the stub out or stub pipe.

Insert the plumber’s snake into the pipe until you meet a blockage and break it up.

  1. P-Trap

The P-trap is located at the curve of the pipe beneath the sink. It is usually located in a cabinet. Put a bucket or basin under the drain to collect any water that may drop; then you can remove the P-trap from the drainpipe and remove any blockage you find in it.

Replace it and let the water run through it.

  1. Plunger

A plunger is a common household tool used for unblocking sinks. If you use a double sink, close the second side using a stopper or a wet cloth and form a tight seal around the plunger.

Fill the side of the sink you want to plunge with plenty of water so that it will cover the bell of the plunger. Firmly place the plunger over the drain and plunge it many times and do it vigorously.

Remove the plunger when you hear the suction clear the block and flush the drain properly with warm water.

  1. Baking Soda and Salt

Another effective remedy for block sinks is the use of baking soda and salt. Mix half a cup of salt and baking soda each and pour this mixture down the drain. Allow it to sit there for several hours, and then you flush using boiling water.

You can repeat it for the second time if it doesn’t work at the first attempt.

  1. Baking Soda and Vinegar

Eliminate stagnant water from the sink first, and then pour a sizeable amount of baking soda down the drain –a cup should do the magic –followed by an equal amount of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar.

This will create bubbles, put the stopper when the bubbles subside and wait for about 15 minutes before you pour water down the drain to clear the obstructions. You can repeat it if you do not get the desired result.

  1. Boiling Water and Salt

Clear stagnant water from the sink and pour about a half cup of table salt into the drain. Allow it to stay fora few minutes before flushing the drain with hot water.

  1. Disposal

Blocked waste disposal can create problems, check to see if this is blocked by running the disposal to make sure the blockage is gone. Also, inspect it to make sure it is functioning well.

Flip the switch located on the bottom or sides of the unit below the sink if the disposal is overheated.

  1. Boiling Water

This is the least cost-intensive and easiest way to unblock your sink. Clear the sink of stagnant water and pour a whole kettle of boiling water into the sink and watch to see if the blocks will move out of the way.

If the sink retains the water, give it time to cool down and then you remove the water and try again. Repeat this several times to eliminate what’s blocking the sink.

  1. Call a Professional Plumber

Most of these home remedies work, but their effects are not long-lasting, and besides you might even damage your sink in the process of doing so.

The best way to handle blocked sinks is to call a professional; it will save you time, money, and even prolong the lifespan of your sink.
